Vancouver Island Restaurant: Atlas Cafe, Courtenay

What better way to spend a Sunday then taking a leisurely drive from Nanaimo to beautiful Courtenay! We recently did a survey and our followers/readers voted on who they felt had the best breakfast on Vancouver Island. After a week of voting, Atlas Cafe was the overwhelming winner.

We made reservations for 11am (a perfect time for brunch in my opinion) but we were much too leisurely on our drive and didn't make it to Courtenay until 11:30, at this point the restaurant was stuffed full and our reservation had been given away. The wait staff apologized profusely, but of course this was entirely OUR fault and we waited patiently until a table opened up for four. We barely waited 10 minutes and then we were quickly seated by the window in a bustling atmosphere. Atlas Cafe has a wonderful relaxed, fun, quirky feel - accommodating to youth, seniors, family and everything in between! Our server was very attentive, yet relaxed and we settled in to check out the menu. During weekdays breakfast is served 8:30-11:30am, while on weekends they cleverly continue breakfast for those late risers until 2pm. The breakfast menu had a great variety of assorted benny's - all of the breakfast meals came with the Atlas roasted potatoes (complete with SWEET potato hashbrowns, the highlight for me!) and fresh fruit. We noticed, even with full tables, wait staff was prompt and friendly and everything arrived quickly and hot.

Huevos Rancheros($11.00) -
poached eggs on blue corn tortilla with roasted sweet chili yams, black beans, smoked asiago cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole

Florentine Eggs($11.00) - poached eggs, toasted english muffin, sautéed spinach, charred red onions, tomatoes, house hollandaise

The pictures pretty much speak for themselves, not only was our breakfast completely delicious and more than satisfying, the prices were lower than I've seen for a high quality breakfast consisting of local fresh foods (even the fruit tasted fresh!) and the service was amazing for such a busy bustling place! The homemade hot sauce was spicy and smokey, perfect for drizzling on your eggs or dipping your hash browns in. The hollandaise sauce was rich, yet light - absolutely perfection! The breakfast portions were perfect and even our foodie friends from Vancouver (one of whom is an experience waitress) were very happy with the service, food and ambiance. We've discovered both lunch and breakfast at Atlas - we will be back very soon for the dinner!
Atlas Cafe came recommended from many people and I would agree wholeheartedly this is one of the best breakfasts on Vancouver Island and I would suggest Atlas 100%!
