Vancouver Island Brewery - Vancouver Island Brewery was the Island's first craft brewery. From humble beginnings in a small warehouse in Central Saanich in 1984 they began by handcrafting a small selection of draught only products for pub customers on Vancouver Island.

Through loyal Island support, they began to grow and add to their portfolio of fresh handcrafted local ales and lagers. In 1995, they grew out of their original operation and made the decision to build a new brewery at 2330 Government Street in Victoria B.C. where the brewery still stands and operates today.

They have grown from just 6 employees in 1984 to over 40 today and all of their brewery employees are “Islanders” with true Island roots. They have developed a 25 year tradition and connection with Vancouver Island and are proud of their history of supporting numerous local businesses, charities, and community events over the years. Part of the breweries philosophy will always be to make a positive impact and commitment to our local community and economy and to ensure they stay vibrant, growing and long lasting.



Lulu's Local - Launched on October 8th, 2011, at Village Food Market on Gabriola Island, Lulus Local is a Distribution Network that supports our Cultural Economy, in the form of a Social Enterprise(*) in the making that connects local artisan producers with independent merchants. Any profits will help support local arts and artists. Our dream is that Lulu’s Local will help create relationships that support community food culture, artisan producers, and local artists, in a lively, creative, and sustainable model.

The seeds for this project were planted with the launch of Lulu’s Lager and with our collaboration with Gabriolan artisan Margot Fedoruk (Starfish Soap Company), who has created the luscious Lulu’s Soap. We are now working with several artisan producers, both from Gabriola and from around the Vancouver Island region, and are very excited to be helping to bring their high quality, sensually appealing, and environmentally conscious products to you

Historically, all the breweries for Lucky Lager have been in the U.S It is only available in selected areas. Prawning in Nanaimo

Between Piper's Lagoon and Neck Point Park in Nanaimo   Since prawning is open year round (in most areas always check the BC Sport Fishing Guide to learn of possible closures in your area) my dad and I decided to brave the unpredictable winter weather and head out just off of Neck Point Park to drop some prawn traps.   There are actually 6 species of shrimp/prawns that thrive off the British Columbia coast, but we were after the largest of the species; the local spot prawn. Large females can exceed 23 cm in total length! You can tell a spot prawn by 3 distinct white horizontal bars on their head area and two white spots on their first and fifth abdominal segment. Prawns are male in their second and third year, then becomes female in the third or fourth year, eggs can be found on the underside of their abdomen Oct - March. Vancouver Island Hiking: Harewood Plains, Nanaimo

The Harewood Plains in Nanaimo B.C is home to second growth forest and open meadows and highlights an amazing view of south Nanaimo. It is bordered by Harewood Mines Road, 10th St and McKeown in Chase River. It can be accessed via Harewood Mines road just past Rimrock Trail, or at the end of McKeown Way the first right off of Chase River road past the elementary school. MAP The Harewood Plains area is privately owned by stakeholders Island Timberlands and the BC Transmission Corporation (they maintain the transmission lines throughout this area). The area contains some rare plants, 10 rare plant species that are considered endangered or threatened. One extremely rare plant called the meadow bird's foot trefoil (Lotus pinnatus), is only found on the Harewood Plains and in a small area in Duncan. This area is unprotected and at risk for being destroyed by motorized vehicles and people walking off-trail. It is important to respect the land and stay on designated trails. We entered
