Coast Realty Group Helps Raise the Roof for
Habitat for Humanity with $30,000 Three-Year Partnership
Funds Will Go Towards Putting Three Roofs on Habitat Duplexes
Nanaimo, BC – April 3, 2012 Today Coast Realty Group Nanaimo, Vancouver Island’s largest independent real estate company, announced a three-year, $30,000 commitment to Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island (HFHMVI) - Raise the Roof. The funds will go towards building roofs on three HFHMVI duplexes in the next three years, which will empower six families with home ownership.
Coast Realty Group is a strong supporter of organizations helping people locally. Their donation is the first long-term corporate pledge that Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island has ever received since it began serving the Nanaimo-area in 1994. The 2012 portion will put a roof on a duplex, HFHMVI’s 11th and 12th homes, in the Mid-Vancouver Island area in 2012.
“Our Habitat affiliate is thrilled to partner with Coast Realty Group in a “Raise the Roof campaign,” says Teresa Pring, Executive Director, HFHMVI. “The Habitat for Humanity home ownership model empowers families by providing a hand up, not a hand out. A multi-year commitment from Coast Realty Group supports our home building and assists us in our 2013 and 2014 build plans as well.”
The funds for Raise the Roof are generated by donations from close to 100 Coast Realty Group - Nanaimo REALTORS® who contribute to a charity fund. Money will also be raised through various Coast Realty Group events throughout the year.
HFHMVI was selected out of a list of worthy charities that all Coast Realty Group REALTORS® voted on. The funds from Coast Realty Group are going directly to help families in the community, creating positive legacies for each family by owning their own home.

Prawning in Nanaimo

Between Piper's Lagoon and Neck Point Park in Nanaimo   Since prawning is open year round (in most areas always check the BC Sport Fishing Guide to learn of possible closures in your area) my dad and I decided to brave the unpredictable winter weather and head out just off of Neck Point Park to drop some prawn traps.   There are actually 6 species of shrimp/prawns that thrive off the British Columbia coast, but we were after the largest of the species; the local spot prawn. Large females can exceed 23 cm in total length! You can tell a spot prawn by 3 distinct white horizontal bars on their head area and two white spots on their first and fifth abdominal segment. Prawns are male in their second and third year, then becomes female in the third or fourth year, eggs can be found on the underside of their abdomen Oct - March. Vancouver Island Hiking: Harewood Plains, Nanaimo

The Harewood Plains in Nanaimo B.C is home to second growth forest and open meadows and highlights an amazing view of south Nanaimo. It is bordered by Harewood Mines Road, 10th St and McKeown in Chase River. It can be accessed via Harewood Mines road just past Rimrock Trail, or at the end of McKeown Way the first right off of Chase River road past the elementary school. MAP The Harewood Plains area is privately owned by stakeholders Island Timberlands and the BC Transmission Corporation (they maintain the transmission lines throughout this area). The area contains some rare plants, 10 rare plant species that are considered endangered or threatened. One extremely rare plant called the meadow bird's foot trefoil (Lotus pinnatus), is only found on the Harewood Plains and in a small area in Duncan.
