CrossFit Nanaimo

I decided on a whim to give CrossFit Nanaimo a visit to see what all the hoopla was about. I was a tad nervous that I was going to get my ass handed to me (and it did happen). Located at 2330 McCullough Rd, it is a facility that looks like it could accommodate 12 people comfortably. Beginner//Intro classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30-6:30pm, these are imperative so you can develop the fundamental skills required to partake in the "WOD" (WorkoutOftheDay). These skills include:

  • Gymnastics
  • Olympic Lifting
  • Power Lifting
  • Sprinting
  • Rowing
  • Kettlebells
  • Plyometrics
When we arrived, a previous class was just finishing up and we were pleasantly greeted and quickly began filling out waivers. Your first CrossFit class is free! Our intro class had 6 people which seemed like a perfect number, it didn't feel crowded at all. Our coach for the class was Katie and she was great! She was very motivational and led us through a variety of basic skills that we will be required to master before we do a "WOD". Throughout the first half hour she just worked with us on proper form, using equipment and teaching us all the routines we will need to know. These included push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, burpees, box jumps and a 200m run (among others I can't recall the names). Once we had the basics down we did a circuit (the goal was to do the circuit 5 times).

I was supposed to keep track of how many times I completed an entire fitness circuit (starting with 5 box jumps and finishing with a 200m run) but I was distracted by my jello feeling quads! In the end I wrote down 2 times completed - but I swear it was more than that! Needless to say I was definitely feeling the burn once the hour was over. It was definitely a good burn. I felt more out of shape than I had previously thought, but it was only more incentive to come to another intro class the next week.

I felt like an hour doing CrossFit was far more worthwhile than an hour in the gym - CrossFit is fast-paced and really does a great job in getting you sweating quickly. If you're feeling bored or not challenged with your current fitness regime I recommend give CrossFit a try. It would make great cross-training for any athlete.
