Lantzville Foothills

Viewpoint looking East

We finally decided to check out the Lantzville Foothills after talking about checking it out for so long, I love doing a hike that has spectacular views (it's such a reward!).

Viewpoint looking south towards Nanaimo
If you follow Aulds Rd west across the Island Highway until you hit Harwood Dr and make a left, following Harwood until you hit the end with a gate on the left that says "Lantzville Foothills" with some decent off-road parking. Park and head over the bridge onto what looks like a logging road. You can spend a good 2-4 hours exploring, including a 7km loop or a shorter 4km jaunt. Lots of decent hills to climb to some pretty amazing viewpoints. We spent about 3.5 hours adventuring, including a spectacular viewpoint looking towards Nanaimo and East Lantzville.

This area was a proposed 720 hectare housing development in 2004. A lack of sufficient water sources put it on hold. However, in Sept 2014 the city of Lantzville signed a term with developers to revive the Lantzville Foothills Estates project. We'll see what happens there.

In the meantime, if you haven't explored the old logging roads and gorgeous bluffs of the Lantzville Foothills, pick a clear sunny day and check out these views! Decent hiking shoes are a must, lots of loose rocks and gravel.
